Tedd színesebbé az angolod!

Gyakran tapasztalom, hogy az angolul tanulók hajlamosak elsősorban a főnevekre és igékre koncentrálni a szavak tanulása során, miközben megfeledkeznek a melléknevekről, pedig kevés olyan szófaj létezik, amellyel ilyen mértékben lehetne színezni a beszélt és írott szöveget. 

A melléknevek változatos és megfelelő használatával sokkal árnyaltabban és választékosabban fejezhetjük ki a mondanivalónkat. Épp ezért komoly minőségi ugrást jelent ha valaki képes például a big és small helyett az enormous/massive/gigantic és a tiny/miniature/petite melléknevek körébe tartozó jelzőket magabiztosan használni.

Természetesen, mint minden szófajnál, a melléknevek esetében is alapvető fontosságú tisztában lenni az egyes szavak jelentésárnyalataival és kollokációival (azaz állandósult szókapcsolataival). Ezért mielőtt elkezdenénk aktívan használni az újonnan elsajátított mellékneveket, érdemes mindenképp felütni egy megbízható egynyelvű szótárt valamint egy kollokációs szótárt, hogy meggyőződjünk azok pontos jelentéséről és használatáról.

Összegyűjtöttem 30 viszonylag széles körben használható melléknevet, amelyeket érdemes elsajátítani a választékosabb beszéd (és írás) érdekében:

#1 abundant   
= existing or available in large quantities
   Rainfall is abundant in the region.

#2 ample
= enough, and often more than you need
   There is ample evidence to prove his guilt.

#3 appealing 
= attractive and interesting
   He had a nice smile and an appealing personality.

#4 breathtaking
= extremely impressive or beautiful
   The scenery along the coast was just breathtaking.

#5 brilliant 
= extremely intelligent or skilled
   The idea was quite brilliant.

#6 dazzling
= extremely attractive or exciting
   He gave a dazzling performance.

#7 eccentric
= strange or unusual (sometimes in a humorous way)
   She is an eccentric lady living with 26 cats.

#8 exceptional
= much greater than usual, esp. in skill, intelligence, and quality
  The children showed exceptional courage.

#9 exuberant
= happy, excited, and full of energy
  Our son is a highly active and exuberant little person.

#10 gigantic
= extremely large
   A gigantic wave came in from the sea.

#11 generous
= larger than usual or expected
   I was surprised when my boss gave me such a generous pay increase.

#12 glorious
= very beautiful in a way that makes you feel happy
   The cottage is surrounded by the most glorious countryside.

#13 gorgeous
= very beautiful and pleasant
   She was wearing a gorgeous red and gold silk sari.

#14 incredible
= extremely good
   What an incredible game that was.

#15 marvellous
= extremely enjoyable or exciting
   It's been an absolutely marvellous day.

#16 memorable
= worth remembering
   The romantic evening cruise will be a memorable experience.

#17 outrageous
= shocking and morally unacceptable
   These prices are just outrageous.

#18 petite
= (of women) small and thin in an attractive way
   She was dark and petite, as all his wives had been.

#19 phenomenal
= extremely successful, esp. in a surprising way
   Her rise to fame was quite phenomenal.

#20 quaint
= interesting or attractive with a slightly strange and old-fashioned quality
  She was living in a quaint old cottage.

#21 quintessential
= being the most typical example of something
   Sheep's milk cheese is the quintessential Corsican cheese.

#22 spectacular
= very sudden or extreme
   We've had spectacular success with the product.

#23 splendid
= impressive and beautiful
  The huge windows gave us a splendid view of the grounds.

#24 stunning
= impressive and beautiful
   At the exhibition, there was a stunning display of tropical plants.

#25 superb
= of the very best quality
   The seaside restaurant offered superb seafood.

#26 tantalizing
= causing excitement and desire in you
   I caught a tantalizing glimpse of the sparkling blue sea through the trees. 

#27 tranquil
= calm and peaceful
   She stared at the tranquil surface of the water.

#28 tremendous
= very great in amount or level
   She's been a tremendous help to me over the last few months.

#29 unquestionable
= obvious and impossible to doubt
    Her achievements are unquestionable.

#30 vivid
= producing clear, powerful, and detailed images in the mind
   He gave a very vivid and often shocking account of his time in prison.

Az új mellékneveket mindig célszerű szókapcsolatok részeként (legalább egy főnévvel együtt) megtanulni, ez segít ugyanis abban, hogy egészen pontosan ismerjük a használati körüket.
